The laser is a wonderful invention that has many different uses. The various applications of lasers are possible because there is not just one, but many types of lasers. The laser type depends on the material used in creating the laser. Thus, it can be said that lasers’ type is ascertained by the medium employed.

1) Solid State Lasers

This type of laser is one in which the material used for the laser is a solid substance. The solid substance that is used for lasing is generally stimulated by a flashlight or other type of light. Depending on whether the stimulation is continuous or intermittent, you will get solid lasers that are in a continuous beam or a pulsed beam. Examples of solid state lasing material are: neodymium:yttrium-aluminum garnet, ruby, Erbium-Holmium, titanium sapphire etc.

2) Excimer Lasers

This type of laser is one where the use of gases is employed to create the laser. Different reactive gases (e.g chlorine, fluorine) are used with inert gases (e.g argon, xenon, and krypton). The mixture of these gases is excited, resulting in the release of a simulated molecule, called dimer. Upon lasing, this dimer produces ultraviolet lasers. Thus, the term Excimer comes from excited dimer. 

3) Gas State Lasers

In this type of laser, the lasing material is a gaseous material. Helium and helium-neon are the two gases most popularly used to create gas lasers. When CO2 is used, the laser created is an infrared laser. Gas lasers are typically red in color.

4) Dye Lasers

Some organic dyes, such as the very oft used rhodamine G6, have molecules that can be easily excited, because of which tunable lasers with many different frequencies can be achieved. Lasers created from dyes that are either liquid dyes or suspension materials, are known as dye lasers.

5) Semi-conductor Lasers

These lasers are not solid state lasers and are also referred to as diode lasers. A semi conductor laser is not very powerful on its own, and is thus generally used in combination with other devices.

Thus, these are the various types of lasers, which are all classified according to the lasing materials employed.
